How to convert decimal feet to feet and inches

A reliable method for turning CAD and spreadsheet values into tape-readable measurements.

The method

Keep the whole-number portion as feet. Multiply the decimal remainder by 12 to obtain inches. Multiply the remaining inch fraction by 16 and round to obtain sixteenths.

Example

For 3.625 feet, keep 3 feet. Multiply 0.625 by 12 to get 7.5 inches. The result is 3 feet 7 1/2 inches.
